Historical Roots

Louisville’s story began in the 1870s when coal deposits were discovered in the Coal Creek area during the construction of the Colorado Central Railroad. In 1877, Louis Nawatny, hired by investor Charles Welch, opened the first coal mine and, the following year, platted 40 acres to establish the town of Louisville, naming it after himself. Throughout the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the town thrived as a hub for coal mining, with 24 active mines producing millions of tons of coal and shaping the region’s labor history through significant strikes like the Long Strike (1910–1914). Though the coal industry declined by the 1950s, Louisville reinvented itself as a residential community, balancing modern growth with its historic charm. Today, the well-preserved downtown district celebrates this heritage with century-old buildings, now home to boutiques and restaurants, offering a unique blend of history and modern vibrancy.

For over 40 years, the Louisville Chamber of Commerce has supported local businesses and fostered economic growth. Through advocacy, networking, and community events, the Chamber promotes a vibrant economy while embracing the city’s unique character and values.
